In the early 1500s, Leonardo da Vinci illustrated a book called "La Divina" (The Divine Ratio), written by the mathematician Luca Pacioli, which described a mathematical theory called the "golden ratio". The golden ratio was used in Renaissance paintings and sculptures to achieve balance and beauty.

Da Vinci later called this cut the aurea or golden section.
